Families of Victims of the Port Explosion: For the Formation of the Indictment Body

The families of the victims of the Beirut port explosion held their monthly vigil in front of the Immigrant statue, across from the port of Beirut, under the slogan "We want the investigation to continue." The families raised pictures of the victims and banners condemning the "political authority and its failure to investigate."

Afterward, Mariana Fadoulian delivered a statement on behalf of the families, stating: "1300 and 8 days, and we are waiting for the human conscience of some officials to awaken, and for them to allow the judiciary to impose the truth without imposing their own teachings and dictating their biased decisions that serve only their politics, positions, and ambitions. 1300 and 8 days, and we demand justice for our victims, the truth, and accountability."

She added: "Each time, we have said and continue to bet on the national judiciary, the honest judges, and those with a free conscience and word. We demand that their ears be attentive to the voice of the living conscience and to the souls of the innocent victims and the cries of their grieving families."

She asked, "Is it logical that no one is responsible, and everyone is innocent? Is it permissible to obscure the facts and evidence, bury the file, and obstruct the investigation for fear that it may reach the heads of the implicated who are affiliated with politicians?"

She indicated that "everything has become clear in its aims, as the law applies only to the weak," asking, "Where is the state from the law? Where is the law of separation of powers? You control the joints of the state and all authorities."

She called for the "Higher Judicial Council to form the indictment body and complete the quorum of the General Assembly of the Court of Cassation with the appointed and delegated judges."

She addressed "the Public Prosecutor, Judge Jamal Al-Hajjar, to retract the decision that prevented the competent authorities from cooperating with the investigator," considering that "such an unjust decision against innocent victims is akin to another crime." She stated, "We will be forced to take escalatory steps that may have dire consequences."
