Kuwait: Imprisonment of Former Parliamentary Candidate and the Reason?

The Kuwaiti Criminal Court sentenced a former parliamentary candidate to 4 years in prison with hard labor for "insulting the throne." According to the newspaper "Al-Rai," the court sentenced assistant Al-Quraifa, a political activist, to 4 years in prison in a "State Security" case on charges of "insulting the throne" and spreading false news.

The newspaper confirmed that the accused appeared from prison during the trial session and denied the charges against him, which included "inciting a change of government, insulting the throne, spreading false news, and slandering the Minister of Interior." His lawyers present at the hearing requested his release.

It is noteworthy that assistant Al-Quraifa, the Kuwaiti political activist, was arrested on April 23 of last year. The Public Prosecution had announced at that time that it "ordered the detention of a citizen in pretrial detention for insulting the throne during a seminar he held at his election headquarters while running for the 2024 National Assembly elections," without mentioning his name.
