Sami Gemayel to Miqati: Transparency Needed on Agreement with the European Union

Lebanese Forces Party leader MP Sami Gemayel submitted a letter to Prime Minister Najib Miqati, demanding clarification on what was agreed upon with the European Commission. He called for the public to be informed about the facts regarding the situation and for precise and transparent disclosure of the details and practical steps the government will take to prevent the integration of Syrians in Lebanon and to expedite their return to Syria, especially as military operations have ceased in most Syrian territories that are now considered safe.

He noted that "there is a contradiction between what Miqati announced regarding Lebanon's refusal to become a host country and the call for the return of displaced persons to their homeland, particularly those who entered Lebanon after 2016 for purely economic reasons, and what European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen declared about the financial package of one billion euros primarily intended for providing equipment and training for border management to assist Lebanon in controlling migration and preventing illegal immigration and smuggling of migrants to Europe from Lebanese shores." This implies that the main goal of European support is to ensure that Syrians do not migrate to Europe rather than alleviating Lebanon's burden and hosting Syrians in Europe.

Gemayel concluded, stating that "the Lebanese people deserve to know the truth and to feel assured about the future of their country after all the tragedies they have suffered. It is our duty to uphold the sovereignty of the Lebanese state and the unity of its territory and the identity of its people in the face of any attempts or plans that may undermine its delicate demographic balance or compromise the foundations of its existence and stability in the long term." He called for "necessary measures to dispel any ambiguity or confusion regarding this sensitive and important issue."
