Russia Strikes Major Dam in Largest Attack on Energy Infrastructure in the War

The Ukrainian Air Force revealed that "Russia launched on Friday the largest missile and drone attack on the country's energy infrastructure since the outbreak of the war, hitting the largest dam in the country and causing power outages in several regions." It was reported that "Russia fired 88 missiles and 63 Shahed drones, of which 37 missiles and 55 drones were shot down, which is a lower rate than usual and may reflect the widespread use of hypersonic and ballistic missiles that are difficult to intercept."

The company "Ukrhydroenergo," the Ukrainian state hydroelectric energy company, stated that the Dnipro Hydroelectric Station dam in Zaporizhia, southern Ukraine, and its hydraulic structures were targeted, but the risk of dam collapse was ruled out. It was noted that "there is currently a fire at the station, and emergency teams and power workers are on-site to address the impact of multiple airstrikes."

Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko stated that "this is the largest attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure." He wrote on Facebook: "The aim is not just to cause damage, but to replicate last year's attempt to disrupt the country's energy system on a large scale."
