A dentist has revealed common fruits and juices that we should avoid consuming too much, as they may lead to "erosion" of tooth enamel and weaken it. Citrus fruits and their juices can cause enamel erosion, making teeth more susceptible to cavities. Dr. Sahel Patel from the "Marylebone Smile" clinic in London stated, "Some foods and drinks can be particularly harmful to your teeth due to their high sugar content, acidity, or potential to stick to teeth and promote cavities."
Despite the health benefits of citrus fruits, he warned that they can be harmful to teeth. Dr. Patel explained, "While they provide nutritional benefits, citrus fruits like lemons, oranges, and grapefruits have high acid levels that can lead to enamel erosion." However, drinking citrus juices through a straw can help reduce contact with teeth and prevent the risk of enamel erosion.
Citrus fruits and their juices contain a mix of sugars and acids that create an environment hazardous to tooth enamel. This can make the enamel brittle and lead to erosion, resulting in cavities and tooth loss. Once enamel is lost, the body cannot produce new enamel.
To maintain your dental health, Dr. Patel advises waiting a few minutes before brushing your teeth after consuming citrus fruits or their juices. He said, "If breakfast includes acidic foods or juices, it is best to wait at least 30 minutes after eating before brushing your teeth. Brushing teeth too soon after consuming acidic foods can weaken the enamel, as the acids temporarily soften it. Waiting allows saliva to naturally neutralize the acids."
