The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) announced today, Tuesday, that it will complete this year the construction of the first "ultra-fast" hydrogen refueling station in the region that will produce "clean hydrogen" from water. Toyota will assist in testing the station. Sultan Al Jaber, CEO of ADNOC Group and also the head of the upcoming climate summit (COP28), stated in a press release, "Hydrogen is an important fuel for achieving a responsible, logical, gradual, practical, and fair transition in the energy sector and contributing to the significant reduction of emissions. This step is part of ADNOC's plans for the development and expansion of its business."
ADNOC mentioned that it has agreed to collaborate with Toyota and Al-Futtaim Automotive to test the ultra-fast hydrogen refueling station using several vehicles that run on clean hydrogen. The company noted, "The pilot program will help ADNOC study the use of ultra-fast hydrogen refueling technology in transportation projects, supporting the UAE's national hydrogen strategy." This strategy aims to make the UAE one of the largest hydrogen producers by 2031.
The company stated that ADNOC Distribution will take on the responsibility of operating the station, which has commenced construction and is set to be completed later this year. Although the company is investing in green technology, it is also seeking to expand its oil production to five million barrels per day by 2027, an objective that was originally scheduled for 2030. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) reported that the UAE's production reached approximately 2.9 million barrels per day in June.
