The ninth edition of the FIFA Women's World Cup has broken the attendance record after 27,706 fans witnessed Sweden's victory on penalties against the defending champion USA in the Round of 16, bringing the total attendance for the tournament to 1,367,037 fans. The previous record was set in Canada in 2015 when 1,353,506 fans attended the matches of the tournament featuring 24 teams. The previous tournament in France four years ago attracted 1,131,312 fans over 52 matches, averaging 21,756 spectators per match. In the current edition, the average attendance for the 52 matches held so far is 26,289 people. This number is expected to increase as fans flock to the major stadiums where tickets have sold out for the last 12 matches of the tournament. The largest attendance for this edition was 75,784 fans at the match between co-host Australia and Ireland at the start of both teams' campaign in the tournament. The match between Japan and Costa Rica on July 26 in New Zealand saw the lowest attendance, with 6,992 fans.
