Iraq Receives Offers to Launch Its First Satellite

The Parliamentary Committee on Transport and Communications announced that Iraq has received two offers from French and Egyptian companies to create and launch its first satellite. Committee member Zuhair Shahid Al-Fatlawi stated, "The Iraqi satellite is still in the proposal stage," indicating that the file has been transferred from the Ministry of Communications to the Ministry of Science and Technology to prepare all project requirements.

On his part, satellite expert Falah Nuri noted that launching an Iraqi satellite would require collaboration with global companies specialized in manufacturing Earth observation satellites, emphasizing that access to the technology for these satellites is limited to those entities. He added that a decision from higher authorities to initiate such a project would require official approvals to communicate with the relevant foreign entities and provide the necessary financial allocations.

He pointed out that satellites come in various types according to their missions, with communication, internet services, and television broadcasting satellites falling under the responsibilities of the Ministry of Communications and its affiliated companies. He confirmed that the Space Agency has been officially tasked to serve as the foundation for an Iraqi space agency specializing in Earth observation satellites for civil and security purposes.
