Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated today, Wednesday, that "the spirit of the United Nations died in Gaza," following Israeli strikes targeting displaced individuals in the city of Rafah. Erdogan said before members of his party, "The United Nations cannot even protect its own staff. What are you waiting for to act? The spirit of the United Nations died in Gaza."
The Turkish president called on the "Muslim world" to take action regarding the war in Gaza. Erdogan had previously stated that "if Israel is not stopped, it will sooner or later covet Anatolian lands," and considered Hamas to be "the first line of defense for Anatolia in Gaza."
The Anadolu Agency quoted Erdogan saying, "Do not think that Israel will stop at Gaza; if this terrorist state is not halted, it will sooner or later covet Anatolian lands based on the myths of the promised land." He added, "What is happening in the Gaza Strip is unprecedented; even Hitler did not commit what has been done in the Palestinian sector... Israel is not only attacking the Palestinians in Gaza. It is also attacking us."
