Japan expressed appreciation for "Morocco's serious and credible efforts" within the framework of the autonomy initiative to resolve the Moroccan Sahara issue. A statement from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs mentioned that this stance was conveyed by Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa during her discussions in Tokyo with Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Living Abroad, Nasser Bourita. Citing Japan's "consistent" position, Kamikawa referred to the Moroccan autonomy initiative, presented to the United Nations Secretary-General on April 11, 2007, highlighting Morocco's "serious and credible efforts to advance the resolution process of this issue (the Moroccan Sahara issue)." For his part, Bourita, who is visiting Japan, praised Japan's position regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue, as reported by the Maghreb Arab Press.
