Lawyers in Tunisia carried out a protest movement this Thursday morning in front of the Justice Palace in the capital, protesting what they considered a "violation of the premises of the Bar Association" and condemning the alleged torture of a lawyer by security personnel during his detention. This protest comes alongside a strike that is taking place in all courts across the country, marking the second strike implemented within a week.
The National Bar Association confirmed in a statement that lawyer Mahdi Zaqrouba, who was arrested on Monday, was tortured during detention by agents from the Ministry of the Interior, a claim that the Ministry of Interior strongly denied in media statements. Earlier, Tunisian authorities arrested lawyer and political commentator Sonia Dhahmani after she made comments on a local television station about the state of the country.
