The UN Security Council has called for an end to the siege of El Fasher by the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan and to halt the fighting around this major city in the Darfur region, where hundreds of thousands of civilians are being held. The resolution, prepared by the United Kingdom and supported by 14 council members with Russia abstaining from the vote, "demands that the Rapid Support Forces end the siege of El Fasher and calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and de-escalation of tensions within and around El Fasher." The council also urged all parties to the conflict in Sudan to ensure the protection of civilians.
