The chairwoman of the Woman and Child Committee, MP Inaam Azeddine, held a meeting to follow up on the issue of children's foods available in the Lebanese market that do not meet the required standards. Azeddine explained that the discussion focused on a study conducted by the National Council for Scientific Research, which revealed that 117 food products for children are present in the Lebanese market without meeting health standards regarding unhealthy levels of saturated fats, palm oil, and added sugars.
She also pointed out that the meeting addressed the issue of discrepancies between the nutritional labels on packages and the actual contents. Azeddine stated that the committee has sent an official letter to both the Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Economy urging them to take necessary actions to determine the status of the Lebanese market in this regard and to track the products from their country of origin to the Lebanese consumer.
She called for the committee to be informed of the results of the tests that the relevant ministries are supposed to conduct to ensure that the products comply with the standards adopted in Lebanon according to ministerial decrees. She urged for swift action to address this issue, which affects every family, especially since children's consumption of these products increases the likelihood of developing chronic diseases in the long term, affirming the commitment to follow up on the matter until its resolution.
