Iraq: Colonel in Kirkuk Police Caught Committing Bribery

The Iraqi Federal Commission of Integrity announced today, Wednesday, the execution of an operation to apprehend a senior officer in the Kirkuk police caught red-handed while receiving a bribe from a citizen. The government communication and media office of the commission stated that "a work team from the Kirkuk Investigation Office moved to the Domiz police station in the center of the province, where they managed to catch the investigative officer at the station for extorting a citizen and blackmailing him by demanding payment in exchange for providing him with some necessary documents regarding ongoing investigations under his jurisdiction."

The office added that "the team carried out the operation, which led to the arrest of the officer holding the rank of 'Colonel,' in coordination with a support force from the Directorate of Security and Internal Affairs, during the commission of the bribery crime inside his office at the police station during official working hours," noting that "the amount of the bribe he received from the citizen was one million dinars."

It continued, "An official seizure report was prepared for the operation, which was conducted based on a judicial warrant in accordance with article (307) of the Penal Code," emphasizing "the presentation of the accused before the relevant investigating judge to take the appropriate legal measures and determine his fate."
