Egyptian authorities are investigating the murder of a Jewish businessman with Canadian nationality who was residing in Alexandria, north of the Egyptian capital, according to statements from the Ministry of Interior and Egyptian media. A statement issued by the Egyptian Ministry of Interior on the night of Tuesday-Wednesday reported that "a Canadian businessman who resides in the country permanently was subjected to a gunfire incident in Alexandria on May 7."
The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that "the deceased is a businessman holding both Israeli and Canadian citizenship," indicating that "the Israeli embassy in Cairo is in contact with Egyptian authorities investigating the circumstances of the case."
An security source stated that a Canadian of "Israeli Jewish descent" was killed in a shooting during a robbery in Alexandria, and that authorities are treating the incident as a criminal act. The source added that the incident occurred "for the purpose of theft" and did not link the shooting to the ethnic background of the victim, as reported by media outlets.
The Egyptian Ministry of Interior confirmed the shooting incident, noting that "the man is a permanent resident in Egypt," but neither the ministry nor the source provided further details.
Many Egyptian users on social media circulated a statement attributed to an unknown group calling itself "Troops of Liberation," which claimed responsibility for killing "an Israeli agent who uses some business activities as a cover to collect information and recruit vulnerable individuals for the Mossad," in solidarity with the Palestinians.
