Elon Musk, the head of SpaceX, made a bold claim that humans could live in a city on Mars within the next thirty years. He took to his X account (formerly Twitter) to announce in a tweet, "We are just a few years away from landing on Mars."
The 52-year-old entrepreneur stated, "In less than 5 years, we will reach the uninhabited area, and in less than 10 years, humans will land on the ground, and perhaps humans will establish a city in 20 years. But definitely, within 30 years, civilization will be built on the surface of Mars."
SpaceX, which Musk founded in 2002, was the first private company to send a liquid-fueled rocket into orbit and transport astronauts to the International Space Station. A year before the company was founded, Musk had already laid out plans to terraform the Red Planet through his "Mars Oasis" project, which aims to grow the first seeds in soil outside Earth in a greenhouse.
Musk's 183 million followers reacted to his latest space predictions with excitement. One fan tweeted, "It's unimaginable for many. I hope to live just 10 more years to see that city," while another added, "Between artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and now Mars? I never expected any of this to happen in my lifetime. It's incredible."
This comes after Musk clarified plans to expand awareness of Mars as he prepares to launch more satellites into space. Before the recent launch of a Falcon 9 rocket on Tuesday, May 14, he wrote, "SpaceX's mission is to spread awareness of Mars and then the stars."
