In a heartbreaking video, a baby just a few weeks old was seen drinking water instead of milk in Gaza. Due to the ongoing Israeli siege on the strip and the continuation of war for the third month amidst a lack of basic needs for the population, the availability of essential food items has become rare. The infant was shown in the arms of his displaced mother, who found nothing to feed her child but water instead of milk, while the baby drank eagerly. His few days of life have not spared him from experiencing the tragedies and pains of war, with his image spreading rapidly on social media.
At the same time, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres confirmed on Friday that Gaza is heading towards a catastrophic famine, stating, "We have not seen anything like what is happening there." He mentioned in a press conference that there is no safe place in Gaza, considering the continued operation of humanitarian agencies a miracle. He added that the world waited 71 days for Israel to allow the entry of aid through the Kerem Shalom crossing, pointing out that Israeli military actions are an obstacle to the distribution of relief in Gaza. Additionally, it is expected that about half of Gaza's population will be in a state of "emergency" characterized by high rates of severe malnutrition and increased deaths by February 7, according to a report from the UN Hunger Monitoring System.
