The European Union has warned Israel today, Monday, against launching an attack on Rafah, which EU foreign ministers described as "a disaster for around 1.5 million refugees in the city located on the southern border of the Gaza Strip." Irish Foreign Minister Michael Martin stated before a meeting with EU foreign ministers in Brussels, "The attack on Rafah will be completely catastrophic... it will be unreasonable." He added, "More than 1.5 million people live in a very small corner of Gaza. They are exhausted and worn out with nowhere else to go – how could anyone think of adding more to this trauma?" Israel is preparing for a ground invasion of the southernmost city in the Gaza Strip, which it has described as the last stronghold of the Palestinian Islamic resistance movement (Hamas), after nearly five months of fighting.
