An Indian Navy official revealed that India will bring to trial 35 Somali pirates captured on board a hijacked vessel off the coast of Somalia, marking a departure from its recent practices of rescuing ships and their crews while leaving pirates unarmed at sea. The official stated that the pirates are scheduled to arrive in India on Saturday to be handed over to law enforcement agencies. He added that the charges against the pirates are not yet clear. Indian special forces successfully freed the commercial vessel "Ruwn," flying the Maltese flag, last Saturday after it was hijacked by Somali pirates 450 nautical miles east of Socotra in the North Arabian Sea. This incident marks the first hijacking of a commercial ship by Somali pirates since 2017. The global economy suffered estimated losses of around seven billion dollars at the height of these pirates' attacks in 2011, which included ransoms in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
