Statement from the Iraqi Government on Opening the Military Area in Kadhimiya

The official spokesperson for the Iraqi government, Basim Al-Awadi, issued a statement today, Wednesday, regarding the opening of the military area in Kadhimiya. Al-Awadi noted that "since its formation, the government has focused on launching quality service and development projects that benefit our esteemed citizens. Among the areas included in the government program for million-visitor services is the holy city of Kadhimiya; to present it in a proper manner and provide all means of comfort for its honorable visitors."

He added: "The Council of Ministers has decided to evacuate and open the military area that has been closed for decades and allocate its lands for the establishment of service facilities, cultural and religious centers, as well as multiple rest cities for the esteemed visitors coming to the city from various parts of the world and for the residents of Kadhimiya. Additionally, educational, medical, and sports facilities, as well as commercial markets that reflect the city’s heritage, will be established. The new area will be connected to the Kiryat area by a modern suspension bridge, as well as linked to the area surrounding the shrines of the two Imams, Al-Kadhim and Al-Jawad (peace be upon them), through modern transportation routes, as part of an integrated modern architectural vision."

He further stated that "the building that used to be known as 'the Fifth Section' will be converted into a large museum, serving as a testament to the crimes of the Ba'ath regime against the Iraqis and also embodies the sacrifices and heroism of the martyrs who bravely stood against the dictatorial regime. This museum will preserve all historical documents, evidence, torture tools, and other artifacts as a living testimony for future generations and for history regarding the tragedies of the era of tyranny and the struggles and sacrifices of our people."

He concluded by saying: "The government reiterates its steadfast approach and keen interest in racing against time to launch such large and qualitative projects for the service of all our beloved country’s citizens."
