As Houthi attacks against commercial vessels in the Red Sea continue, the German Army account reported today, Wednesday, on the "X" platform that two drones approaching the frigate "Hessen" in the Red Sea were shot down, with no injuries or damage reported. Earlier, the German Embassy in the United States announced that the German frigate "Hessen" had thwarted a drone attack for the first time since joining the European Union's maritime operation "Aspides" in the Red Sea.
Earlier this month, the EU launched Operation "Aspides" to help protect international navigation in the Red Sea from Houthi attacks in Yemen. The launch of the European mission came two months after Washington established a maritime coalition to protect navigation in the strategic region through which 12% of global trade passes.
The "Guardians of Prosperity" coalition, led by the United States and Britain, targeted Houthi positions in areas under their control in Yemen to limit the ability of Iranian-backed Houthis to attack ships. The U.S. Department of Defense announced yesterday the downing of five drones. The Central Command stated that the drones launched from areas controlled by the Houthis inside Yemen were targeted by a U.S. fighter jet and a ship belonging to the international coalition.
In turn, Houthi-affiliated media reported that U.S. and British airstrikes targeted the island of Albawane in Al Hudaydah, western Yemen. This is part of strikes carried out by the U.S. and Britain against Houthi-controlled sites to disrupt and weaken their capabilities to threaten freedom of navigation and global trade.
