The Taliban imposes restrictions on Afghan women's access to work, travel, and healthcare if they are unmarried or do not have a guardian, according to a United Nations report published on Monday. In one incident, officials from the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice advised a woman to get married if she wanted to keep her job at a healthcare facility, stating it is inappropriate for an unmarried woman to work. The Taliban has banned women from most areas of public life and prevented girls from attending school beyond the sixth grade as part of the harsh measures enacted after seizing power in 2021, despite their initial promises of a more moderate rule. The group has also shut down beauty salons and begun enforcing dress codes, arresting women who do not comply with hijab rules. In May 2022, the Taliban issued a decree calling for women to show only their eyes and recommending they wear burqas from head to toe, similar to the restrictions imposed during their previous rule from 1996 to 2001.
