Minister of Environment: No Ammonium Nitrate Presence at Zouk Plant

A meeting was held in the municipality of Zouk Mikayel attended by the Minister of Environment in the caretaker government, Nasser Yassin, the Mayor of Zouk Mikayel Elias El-Baino, council members, and local community representatives. A statement from the municipality indicated that "Minister Yassin reassured attendees that there is no ammonium nitrate at the Zouk thermal plant," and confirmed that "the majority of materials present in the facility are stored scientifically and professionally in terms of humidity, ventilation, temperature, and protection from sunlight." Yassin noted that "the storage of some materials was contrary to scientific principles and regulations," and offered assistance to communicate with the authorities at Electricité du Liban to supervise their proper storage.

He recommended "contracting a specialized company for inspection and monitoring, in addition to urging Electricité du Liban to dispose of expired materials," emphasizing the "necessity of upgrading the outer fence of the Zouk thermal plant to prevent trespassing and tampering with hazardous materials." At the end of the meeting, attendees praised "the efforts of the Lebanese Army and security forces," and it was agreed with the Minister of Environment to follow up with Electricité du Liban regarding the proper storage of non-compliant materials and to encourage the removal of expired items.
