Former head of the Progressive Socialist Party, Walid Jumblatt, sent a condolence message to French President Emmanuel Macron following the passing of former European Commission President Jacques Delors. Jumblatt's message stated: "I received with deep emotion the news of the passing of former European Commission President Mr. Jacques Delors. I pay tribute to his visionary spirit and his commitment to a strong Europe based on cooperation and solidarity among its peoples, while being dedicated to social progress and openness to the whole world. In the face of the troubling rise of the far-right, the values that informed his vision for Europe should inspire European leaders, for Delors, as rightly stated, succeeded in reconciling Europe with its future in the footsteps of the great historical builders, and I still hope that France and Europe's role in building a more just world is essential."
Jumblatt also extended condolences to Mrs. Martine Aubry, Mayor of Lille, France, for the passing of her father, Mr. Jacques Delors. In the message, he wrote: "I was deeply affected by the passing of your father, Mr. Jacques Delors. The great statesman and prominent figure of the French left successfully and resolutely shaped the contours of contemporary Europe. He lacked nothing in the pursuit of the mission he set for himself—neither vision, nor courage, nor perseverance—in order to achieve a united and strong Europe through solidarity among European peoples and the pursuit of social progress. Mr. Delors's legacy must be preserved for the good of Europe, so that we do not lose hope in a world dominated by injustice and wars, for without justice, how can we hope for peace?"
