The authorities in the Greek capital, Athens, announced the closure of the Acropolis for five hours due to a heat wave, which has also led to the closure of several schools. The archaeological site in the capital, which attracted nearly 4 million visitors last year, will be closed from 12 PM to 5 PM local time, as temperatures are expected to reach 39 degrees Celsius. Primary schools and kindergartens in parts of southern and central Greece have closed their doors due to the rising temperatures. City officials also announced a halt in garbage collection for several hours today, and opened seven air-conditioned facilities for the public. Officials stated that "drones equipped with thermal cameras are being used in Athens to coordinate public health efforts." Moderate weather is expected to return to Greece late Friday.
