New Warning About the Dangers of Building Collapses in Lebanon

The Lebanese Real Estate Authority has warned of the dangers of building collapses in general, particularly older structures. They urged residents of old buildings to exercise caution for their safety, especially in light of the constantly fluctuating climate which directly affects concrete, cement, soil erosion, and rock disintegration. Additionally, the flooding that has occurred in most building basements and foundations has caused moisture, decay, and rust in the steel reinforcements.

In a statement, they noted that "most buildings constructed before 2005 do not meet general safety standards and are not resistant to earthquakes, fires, or disasters. Moreover, most of these buildings have lacked regular maintenance due to exceptional rental laws and scandals regarding random licenses stemming from the absence of oversight."

They also emphasized that "public safety and the current situation cannot bear any additional burdens or losses in lives and properties. We are now hearing reports of partial or complete collapses in every area and province, and not every time will there be a miraculous escape. The North Governorate and Tripoli have issued distress calls regarding the condition of their buildings, with approximately 4,000 buildings reported as threatened according to the Tripoli Municipality."

They concluded: "The concerned authorities, including municipalities and their affiliated institutions, must not delay the serious inspection of buildings at risk of collapse and the dangers posed to both people and property. Isn’t it enough to suffer from calamities?"
