COVID-19 continues to claim around 1,700 lives each week worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. The organization urged "those most at risk of infection to continue receiving vaccinations against the virus." WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned about the dangers of declining vaccine protection. He noted in a press conference that despite ongoing fatalities, "data shows that vaccine protection has diminished among healthcare workers and people over 60, who are among the most vulnerable groups." He added, "The WHO recommends that people in at-risk groups receive a COVID-19 vaccine within 12 months of their last dose." The WHO has reported over seven million deaths due to the coronavirus, although the actual toll from the pandemic is believed to be much higher. The organization urged governments to continue monitoring the viruses, sequencing them, and ensuring access to reliable and affordable testing, treatments, and vaccines.
