Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán predicted that the return of former U.S. President Donald Trump to leadership in the United States would end Russia's war against Ukraine. Orbán expressed his belief that only Trump's return to American leadership could resolve the war in Ukraine. These statements were made during an interview in Budapest with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, published on the platform X.
When Carlson asked Orbán what his next step would be if he were the NATO president or U.S. President Joe Biden, Orbán responded that he might invite Trump back. He added that Trump's return is the only way out of the current situation. Orbán stated that the former U.S. president is "the only man who can save the Western world." He emphasized that Trump followed the best foreign policy in modern decades during his presidency from 2017 to 2021.
Orbán speculated that if Trump had been in power in the U.S. in February 2022, Russia would not have attacked Ukraine at all. He noted that Trump did not initiate any new wars and handled relations with North Korea, Russia, and even China with care. Orbán also maintains good relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and has shown reluctance in supporting Western sanctions against Moscow, often softening EU decisions on sanctions by threatening to use a veto.
