A massive explosion shook northwest Oxford in the UK, showing in a video that it lit up the sky orange just moments after a thunderstorm passed. The mysterious explosion was reported on social media by individuals who claimed to have heard a loud "bang," while video footage showed flames illuminating the night sky, according to "The Mirror" and "Daily Express." Others reported a brief power outage shortly after the explosion. The person who captured the footage can be heard saying, "This is enormous." They later posted on X, previously known as Twitter: "I don’t know, but it was huge. There were a lot of fire trucks and police minutes later on the A40 road."
Another user added: "Did anyone see the sky above Oxford a minute ago? I don’t think I’ve ever seen orange lightning before!"
Anna Coffey, who lives in Somerton about 15 miles north of Oxford, told Sky News: "We witnessed a thunderstorm with lightning in an unbelievable scene... It came out of nowhere, and the noise was incredible." She continued, "A lightning strike hit right outside my house, and it was deafening. It was terrifying. Horrific."
In a clarification from Severn Trent Green, they indicated that the lightning struck the biogas tanks in the city, and the area is being secured. Later, British police stated they were responding to a fire believed to have been caused by lightning striking gas containers near Oxford.
In a statement posted on X, the police said, "It is believed that lightning struck the gas containers on site during a period of bad weather this evening, causing a large fire." The statement added, "No one is believed to be injured, but emergency services are still on the scene."
