The network "The New Arab" revealed the repercussions of the death of Iranian President Ibrahim Raeesi and Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian on Iranian-Iraqi relations, noting that there would be "slight changes" in the near term, with "greater changes" anticipated in later phases. The network stated that "Iranian-Iraqi relations are multifaceted, as Iran has more than one entity working on the Iraqi file due to its importance to the Iranian government." It clarified that "expectations indicate that the deaths of Raeesi and Abdollahian will not significantly impact Iraqi-Iranian relations over the next fifty days, where the effect will be minor, including the delay of some agreements that Raeesi was supposed to sign before his death."
It continued by mentioning that "Iranian President Ibrahim Raeesi was supposed to visit Baghdad to sign a variety of agreements, the most important of which are security and commercial agreements relating to investment contracts for shared fields and the gas export file to Iraq." It added that "after the election of a new Iranian president following the fifty-day period, the new president may decide not to sign those agreements or to modify them to align with his new foreign policy."
The network also noted that "Iraqi-Iranian relations, despite their relative stability, remain subject to the foreign policy set by the Iranian government, which (may change) with the arrival of a new president and foreign minister following the elections." It highlighted that "the relationship between Iran and Iraq primarily relies on the Iraqi political parties' connections with Iran, followed by their relationship with the Quds Forces, and finally, their direct ties with the Iranian government on a political and diplomatic level."
