Forty-nine people, including seven children, drowned across Russia yesterday, Saturday, amidst a spell of high temperatures affecting vast areas of the country. The Russian emergency ministry reported today, Sunday, that "65 drowning cases were recorded in water bodies across the country in the past 24 hours, 49 of whom have died." The Russian news agency noted that this figure is about ten more than the number of drownings reported on the same day last year. Last week, residents of Russia experienced some of the hottest weather in over a century, with Moscow breaking the record set in 1917, and cities nationwide experiencing temperatures significantly exceeding 35 degrees Celsius.
