The criminal council at the Tunis court issued an in absentia sentence of 4 months of imprisonment against former presidential candidate Al-Safi Sayyid. The case is related to a complaint filed by the Electoral Authority regarding suspected forgery of endorsements for the 2014 presidential elections. In 2016, the public prosecutor ordered the case to be referred to one of the security teams for investigation. According to available information, the public prosecutor later presented the case to the criminal council of the Tunis court, which issued the in absentia verdict on May 25. As reported by "Mosaïque" radio, the newspaper "Asabah News" stated that Al-Safi Sayyid was charged with forgery and fraud. The in absentia ruling can be appealed within ten days of notification. Al-Safi Sayyid had recently announced during a press conference his candidacy for the presidential elections at the end of 2024.
