With the onset of the cold season, mandarins (a type of fruit) become available, and a person, especially children, can consume up to a kilogram of them in a day, which may negatively affect health and cause allergies in some. Immunology and allergy specialist Dr. Galina Kotova notes that "the symptoms of mandarin allergy vary depending on the degree of body sensitivity. Some individuals may experience mild reactions, such as itching or redness in the mouth or other areas of the body. In more severe cases, swelling and rashes may occur, or even difficulty breathing or anaphylactic shock."
She added: "Excessive consumption of citrus fruits can lead to rashes and itching, which can be localized, appearing as blisters accompanied by itching and redness of the skin, or it can be extensive, covering the entire body and even the scalp, sometimes accompanied by swelling of the fingers, ears, and lips."
Kotova clarified that "the amount of fruit a person consumes does not determine the amount of vitamins that enter their body. For example, oranges and mandarins will not meet the body’s daily requirement for vitamin C unless a person eats 8 kilograms of them in a day. Therefore, vitamins should be taken in the form of dietary supplements and vitamin complexes."
