Biden to Announce Measures to Lower Fuel Prices

U.S. President Joe Biden announced that he will unveil "next week" measures to lower fuel prices, which have negatively impacted his Democratic Party less than a month before the midterm elections. During a visit to Los Angeles, the president stated, "Gas prices are still too high, and we need to keep working to reduce them. I will have more to say about this next week."

For several months, the Biden administration has tried to lower fuel prices in the domestic market by withdrawing large quantities from the country's strategic oil reserve, according to AFP. In the summer, fuel prices decreased, leading to a rise in the president's and his party's popularity. However, gas prices began to rise again in the United States after oil-producing countries within the "OPEC Plus" cartel decided to cut production last week.

With less than a month until the legislative elections scheduled for November 8, a critical deadline for the second half of Biden's term, the Democratic president finds himself in a difficult position due to high inflation rates in the country. During his visit to Los Angeles to highlight the major infrastructure programs initiated by him, Biden referred to data released on Thursday that showed the inflation rate in the United States remains above 8 percent.

Biden emphasized that "Democrats are working to lower the cost of those things people are talking about around the kitchen table, from medications to health insurance to energy bills to many other things. We are fighting for the working class." Current polls suggest that the Democratic Party is expected to maintain its slim majority in the Senate while losing that majority in the House of Representatives.
