Local media reported, citing sources in law enforcement, that several people were injured in a shooting that resulted in the deaths of up to four individuals, including a police officer and a suspect, in Minneapolis yesterday, Thursday. The Minneapolis Police Department stated on social media that security forces "are responding to an ongoing incident" in which six people were injured, two of them being law enforcement officers.
The police department mentioned that "the situation remains unstable" and urged the public to avoid an area in the Whittier neighborhood, the most densely populated part of Minnesota. The neighborhood is home to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
No official details were available immediately. The "Minneapolis Star Tribune" reported that a 28-year-old police officer was killed and another is in critical condition following a shootout with the suspect. According to the newspaper, this is the first time in over 20 years that a Minneapolis police officer has been shot and killed while on duty.
