Scientists in Australia have detected a strange and repeated signal from space, which they believe originates from an unusual neutron star. According to The Conversation, scientists Manish Caleb and Emile Link suggest that it is not unlikely for the signal to come from other sources. The scientists state, "We have recently discovered a radio emission unlike anything astronomers have seen before. Not only because its cycle lasts about an hour (the longest ever), but also because through multiple observations, we noticed that it sometimes emits long and bright bursts, sometimes quick and faint pulses, and at other times nothing at all." The scientists indicate that this signal was detected using a telescope in Western Australia. They note that similar signals can indeed come from neutron stars, but their cycles cannot be too long. While the neutron star is expected to be the main source of these signals, it is not ruled out that it could originate from a white dwarf star.
