Arrest of Gunman at the U.S. Embassy: Lebanese from Borj el-Barajneh with Prior Offenses

The Information Branch has succeeded in arresting the gunman who fired at the U.S. Embassy in the Al-Kafa'at area. It was revealed that he has prior offenses related to assaults on security forces; he is a Lebanese man in his thirties. According to Reuters, citing two security sources, the ammunition he had at the scene was also seized. The newspaper "Asharq Al-Awsat" reported that the detainee is currently being interrogated under the supervision of Military Prosecutor Judge Fadi Akiki, to uncover the motives behind his act, who is behind it, and whether he has accomplices in the operation.

In a statement on its X page, the Information Branch of the Internal Security Forces announced that it arrested the gunman in a qualitative operation that led to the detention of a person identified as M.K. (born 1997 / Lebanese) in the Al-Kafa'at area, who confessed to shooting at the U.S. Embassy in Aoukar. The weapon used in the operation has been seized, and investigations are ongoing under the supervision of the competent judiciary.

Interior and Municipalities Minister Bassam Mawlawi of the caretaker government contacted U.S. Ambassador Dorothy Shea to inform her of the arrest of the gunman. U.S. embassy spokesperson Jake Nelson expressed the embassy's "gratitude for the swift and thorough investigation conducted by the Lebanese authorities." It is noteworthy that Ambassador Dorothy Shea commented after the incident: "We are fully aware that the authorities are investigating the incident of a gunman firing at the embassy. We appreciate the commitment expressed by our security partners and political officials in this country that they will spare no effort in investigating this incident and pursuing the perpetrator and holding him accountable. We at the U.S. Embassy do not feel fearful in light of this incident; security measures are very strong, our relationship is solid, and we continue our work at the embassy as usual."
