A senior source close to the Paris talks regarding the ceasefire in Gaza told Reuters on Tuesday that the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) has received a draft proposal from the negotiations that includes a halt to all military operations for 40 days and an exchange of Palestinian detainees for Israeli hostages at a ratio of ten to one. The source added that under the proposed ceasefire, hospitals and bakeries in Gaza will be repaired, and 500 trucks of aid will enter the sector daily along with thousands of tents and mobile homes to accommodate the displaced.
According to the source, the draft also states that Hamas will release 40 Israeli hostages, including women, minors under 19, seniors over 50, and patients, while Israel will release approximately 400 Palestinian detainees without re-arresting them.
The source noted that the new proposal under consideration by Hamas includes some of its initial demands for a ceasefire but reduces the exchange of Palestinian detainees for Israeli hostages to a ten to one ratio.
It appears that the ceasefire talks in Gaza are the most serious efforts in weeks to stop the fighting in the war-torn Palestinian territory and secure the release of Israeli and foreign hostages. Mediators have intensified their efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza, hoping to avert an Israeli attack on the city of Rafah in Gaza, where more than a million displaced people are living at the southern edge of the sector.
