WHO Launches First Online Platform for Medical Devices

The World Health Organization announced today, Monday, in Geneva, the launch of the first global open online platform dedicated to information related to medical devices. The organization stated in a press release that the platform, named "MeDevIS," which stands for "Medical Device Information System," is designed to support governments, regulatory bodies, and users in the decision-making process regarding the selection, purchase, and use of medical devices for diagnosing, testing, and treating diseases and health conditions.

The platform includes 2,301 types of medical devices used for a wide range of health conditions, including reproductive health, maternal, neonatal, and child health, as well as non-communicable diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and communicable diseases like COVID-19.

It emphasized that the platform aims to provide a one-stop source for international information that can be highly valuable for those making decisions about life-saving medical technologies, especially in resource-limited environments, and to improve access to these technologies. The platform also contains over 10,000 different medical devices used for protection, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, or rehabilitation of health issues globally.

The organization explained that the platform will enable users to verify the devices they need, including the type, level of healthcare systems supporting the device (such as community or specialized hospitals), device scope, and the required infrastructure among other categories.
