The U.S. House of Representatives Oversight Committee began an investigation on Thursday aimed ultimately at impeaching President Joe Biden over allegations of abuse of power and lying to the public, but Democrats rejected these accusations. This session is seen as a preliminary step on a long road and serves as a preliminary hearing to determine if there are solid grounds to initiate a lengthy investigation before impeachment proceedings begin.
During a session broadcast live in Washington, committee chairman Republican James Comer stated, "Since last December, the Oversight Committee has gathered a significant amount of evidence showing that Joe Biden abused his public office for the benefit of his family." He added, "He (Biden) lied to the American people 10 times, including that he did not speak with his family about business and that there was a significant difference between his personal life and his office, when in fact there was no difference or wall."
Comer continued, "The evidence showed that while Biden was Vice President, he developed family relationships with companies abroad, including Russian and Chinese firms." He accused the American president of lying "when he said his family did not make money from China, even as the committee showed his family received millions of dollars from a Chinese company linked to Chinese intelligence."
He noted that nine members of the Biden family "were involved or benefited from these personal exchanges, and Joe Biden personally benefited from these exchanges and was the mastermind." He asserted that the American people demand accountability for Biden’s corruption and how these actions undermined Biden's presidency and posed a risk to U.S. national security through the abuse of power.
He added, "We have initiated an investigation under Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy focused on whether Biden engaged in unlawful activities under the Constitution." Furthermore, he stated, "The Oversight Committee will review 20 files and pieces of evidence showing that Biden abused his power."
In contrast, the Democrats participating in the session refuted all these accusations, deeming them "politicized and without purpose," noting that the U.S. government is on the brink of shutting down in 48 hours, and instead of resolving this crisis, they are seeking to impeach the president. Republicans claim that Biden and his family benefited from policies he pursued while serving as Vice President under former President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017. They also allege that the Department of Justice interfered in the criminal investigation concerning Hunter Biden.
