Beware of Drinking Water from Plastic Bottles

A well-known doctor on social media has revealed that he does not use plastic water bottles and urges everyone to follow his advice and avoid drinking water this way. Dr. Sourabh Sethi, based in California, warned that these products contain many toxic nano-plastic materials that settle in the body and are linked to cancer and infertility. He pointed to a study published earlier this year that found the average water bottle sold in the United States contains 240,000 pieces of these particles.

In a TikTok video viewed over half a million times, the gastroenterologist begins by saying, "Stop using plastic water bottles. These particles have the potential to penetrate human cells and enter the bloodstream and major organs." Instead, he encouraged his followers to use reusable stainless steel containers for consuming water. Dr. Sethi stated, "Drinking from a plastic bottle during hot days is the most harmful," adding, "The heat will cause more microplastics to be released into your water bottle."

However, the video left some viewers with more questions than answers, as many pointed out that tap water also contains harmful toxins linked to health issues. It was also found that reusable containers, such as stainless steel cups, contain metals associated with various diseases. Concerns about microplastics have increased in recent years. A study published in 2023 used biological models and biomarkers to assess the toxic effects of nanoparticles when consumed. Researchers found that plastic particles can cause cell death, induce oxidative stress, damage DNA, and stimulate inflammatory responses, processes linked to tumor formation.

Other studies have indicated that exposure to small particles may lead to significant congenital heart defects that impair heart function in chicken embryos. However, the effects on humans rely on laboratory and animal studies, with no direct evidence. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated it is premature to panic about bottled water.
