Death of Former Iraqi National Team Player

Adnan Jafar, a player for the Iraqi national football team in the 1970s and one of the stars of Al-Shorta team, passed away today, Sunday, May 26, 2024, in a hospital in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, after suffering from a severe heart attack. Al-Shorta Club stated in a statement, "The administrative body of Al-Shorta Club, on behalf of its staff, shares the sadness of the sports community, Al-Shorta fans, and the family of the deceased, the former deputy head of the administrative board (General Adnan Jafar) who passed away this morning, affected by the health crisis he suffered recently in one of the hospitals in Baghdad." His former teammate Faisal Saleh, who played for Al-Bareed team in the 1970s and is now a journalist in Germany, also announced his death. Saleh posted on his personal Facebook page, "With words filled with pain and sorrow, I offer my condolences to myself and to the family of my brother and teammate in the Al-Bareed team, and one of the stars of Al-Shorta, the late Adnan Jafar, who lived quietly and left this world peacefully, leaving behind a fragrant memory of his life and career as a player and as a responsible individual."

Adnan Jafar was an Iraqi brigadier general who, after retiring from playing in the mid-1980s, served as a member of the administrative body of Al-Shorta Sports Club and also worked in coaching, gaining love, respect, and appreciation from everyone. Notably, Adnan Jafar played for various Iraqi national teams including the "senior, military, and Olympic" teams. He contributed to Al-Shorta's victory in the Arab Police Championship in Damascus in 1978, scoring a goal in the final match against the Kuwaiti police team. He also contributed to Al-Shorta winning the league title in the 1979-1980 season and helped them claim the Arab Clubs Championship title in Baghdad in 1982.
