The United Nations has warned that the closure of the southern border crossings of Gaza means that the access of fuel or aid to any part of the enclave is nearly nonexistent. Earlier, local and international agencies viewed the occupation of the Rafah crossing and the closure of the only commercial crossing, Kerem Shalom, with deepening the humanitarian and health disasters faced by the small coastal enclave since the outbreak of the Israeli war following the attack on October 7 of last year. While the Rafah crossing is the only gateway for Gazans to travel outside Gaza through Egyptian territory, the Kerem Shalom crossing remains the only commercial link after Israel closed six other crossings that connected it to the enclave, following the imposition of a blockade after the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) won the legislative elections in 2006.
