The Hindu newspaper reported today, Saturday, that the death toll from adulterated alcoholic beverages in Tamil Nadu state, southern India, has risen to 55, while 142 others remain in hospitals. The state governor announced compensation of 100,000 rupees (1,200 dollars) for the families of the victims and 50,000 rupees for the injured. He also ordered the formation of a special investigation committee that must submit a report on the incident within three months. The incident occurred in the city of Kalakurichi, located 250 kilometers from the state capital. Initial reports about the deaths from adulterated alcohol emerged on June 18. Police have arrested 14 individuals on charges of trafficking in adulterated alcoholic beverages, and the government has dismissed several police leaders in the city.
