An expert has warned against running a fan all night due to potential health risks that may arise. Sleep expert Martin Seeley stated that the harm caused by a fan on extremely hot days may outweigh its benefits. He explained that electric fans circulate the air in the room but also stir up dust mites, germs, and other allergens. Seeley said, "This can lead to symptoms such as excessive sneezing, watery eyes, a runny nose, a scratchy throat, and breathing difficulties. Regularly cleaning the fan blades or considering using an air purifier can help alleviate allergies."
He added, "Long-term use of electric fans can dry out the air, causing the body to produce more mucus, which can lead to nasal congestion and sinus headaches." Seeley warned that the dry air emitted by fans can cause dryness and irritation of the eyes, which can be particularly problematic for contact lens wearers.
Martin's tips for sleeping in hot weather:
- Place your wrists under cold water for a few minutes before bed, as this quickly cools your body.
- Keep your bedroom curtains closed throughout the day, which may help maintain a cooler room for sleep.
- Expose yourself to as much daylight as possible during the day, as light plays an important role in regulating your body's internal clock and sends signals to your brain about rest time.
- Drink at least two liters of water a day.
- Use a light-colored and lightweight duvet cover to help regulate your body temperature if you tend to sweat at night.
