Is Celebrating Mother's Day "An Innovation"? The Egyptian Fatwa House Responds

Is Celebrating Mother's Day

The Egyptian Fatwa House affirmed that Mother's Day, which falls today, March 21, "is not an innovation but a manifestation of honor and kindness that our religion has commanded." The Fatwa House received a question from a citizen asking, "Does celebrating Mother's Day violate Islamic law? Because some claim it is an innovative act that contradicts Islamic teachings." The Fatwa House stated on its official website in a previous fatwa: "The prohibited innovation in religion is what was introduced contrary to the law, and there is nothing in celebrating Mother's Day that contradicts religious law; rather, it is one of the manifestations of honoring and being dutiful to one's mother as our noble religion has ordered."

The Fatwa House emphasized that "the concept of motherhood for Muslims is a high meaning with clear significance in their linguistic heritage; in Arabic, the term 'mother' refers to the origin, home, leader, and the servant of the people who provides them food and service... Hence, Mecca is called 'the mother of cities' because it is located in the middle of the land, it is the qibla that people turn to, and it is the most significant city."

Furthermore, it added: "Since language is the vessel of thought, the significance of this word for Muslims is linked to the noble human being in whom God placed the foundation of human creation, then settled him as their home, inspired him in governance and upbringing, and instilled in him the love of serving and caring for his affairs. The mother, in all this, is the place of tenderness and mercy to which her children return."

The Fatwa House confirmed that "there is nothing in Islamic law that prevents the existence of an occasion to express the children's kindness toward their mothers; this is an organizational matter that poses no harm, and it is not related to the issue of innovation that many people discuss."
