European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell announced that "EU leaders will call for a sustainable ceasefire in Gaza during their summit in Brussels today, Thursday." Before the summit began, he stated: "Today, the Council will go much further than in the preceding months." He added, "The Council will request a sustainable ceasefire and will certainly also demand the release of hostages, but it will express deep concerns about the situation of the people in Gaza; it is unacceptable." Borrell urged Israel to ensure more aid reaches Gaza, expressing hope that EU leaders would do the same. He continued, "The people of Gaza are starving, so I hope the Council will send a strong message to Israel to stop the blockade and stop preventing food from reaching Gaza and to care for the civilians," affirming that "Israel has the right to defend itself, not to take revenge."
