British Prime Minister Keir Starmer informed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas that the recognition of the State of Palestine as part of the peace process in the Middle East is an "undeniable right." Starmer spoke with Abbas yesterday about the ongoing suffering and loss of life in Gaza. He also discussed the clear and urgent need for a ceasefire with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. A spokesperson for Starmer stated that "the Prime Minister was pleased to have the opportunity to speak with President Abbas very early in his term, given the pressing issues in the region, the ongoing suffering, and the horrific loss of life in Gaza." The spokesperson added that "the Prime Minister briefed President Abbas on his urgent priorities, which include ensuring a ceasefire, the return of hostages, and increasing and accelerating humanitarian aid and financial support for the Palestinian Authority." The spokesperson continued, saying that "during the discussion on the importance of reform and ensuring international legitimacy for Palestine, the Prime Minister made it clear that his long-standing policy on contributing to the peace process has not changed, and that this is an undeniable right of the Palestinians."
