The Japanese "Nikkei" index rose today, Monday, to its highest level since July 1990, reaching 31,560.43 points within the first ten minutes of trading. However, gains were reduced throughout the day, with the index closing up 1.03% at 31,233.54 points. The broader "Topix" index also increased by 1.36% in early trading but failed to approach its highest level in 33 years. It ended the day with a rise of 0.69%.
