Coffee is one of the most popular beverages worldwide, known for its unique taste and stimulating effects. But is it beneficial to drink coffee in the morning? Dr. Yekaterina Kashukh, a gastroenterologist, stated in an interview with the newspaper "Izvestia": "Coffee contains caffeine, a natural psychostimulant that helps to uplift mood in the morning and stimulates mental and physical activity. Caffeine also prevents the formation of gallstones, strengthens blood vessels, and reduces the risk of diabetes. Furthermore, it has been found to help combat depression and lower the risk of Alzheimer's disease and specific types of cancer, such as skin, breast, and prostate cancer."
According to recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO), a healthy individual can consume up to 400 mg of caffeine per day (2-4 cups of coffee). It is also important to consider that caffeine is present in other beverages, such as tea, cocoa, and yerba mate. It's noted that caffeine sensitivity varies from person to person. Some may experience headaches, nausea, and rapid heartbeats even after just one cup of coffee. Therefore, each individual can experimentally determine the amount of caffeine they can consume without forgetting the WHO recommendations.
Dr. Kashukh adds: "Many people prefer drinking coffee on an empty stomach. However, this beverage cannot replace a full breakfast. If a person has digestive issues, drinking coffee in the morning on an empty stomach may exacerbate uncomfortable symptoms such as heartburn, reflux, and abdominal pain. To avoid discomfort, it is better to drink coffee after a meal."
The doctor indicates that drinking coffee with milk or low-fat cream is better for the stomach. However, it should be considered that milk and cream are sources of cholesterol, so only a small quantity should be added to the coffee. Drinking coffee with sugar and sweets is best avoided, as it negatively affects weight and dental health.
